Kirksville was founded in 1841 as the Adair County
seat. The town was named after Jesse Kirk, the first
post master. The Historical Museum is filled with
artifacts including pioneer items, native American
artifacts, and collections of military objects.
Still Osteopathic Museum

Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917) founder of
Osteopathy established the first osteopathic medical
school in Kirksville in 1892. The museum’s collection of
original documents, and other artifacts span over 150
years of the evolution of osteopathic medicine. They
range from bloodletting and blistering instruments to a
completely dissected human nervous system, one of
only four in the world.
Exhibition of Amtrak History

Newly opened this exhibit is contained inside two
Amtrak train baggage cars which have been relocated
to the grounds of the Depot Inn and Suites. The train
cars house display cases full of train and Amtrak
memorabilia including menus and dishes used on
passenger trains thru the years.

Coal Miner’s Museum

Coal mining was the main industry of north Missouri in the
late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Coal Miner’s
Museum contains coal mining items, farm antiques and
memorabilia form local businesses.

The University Art Gallery is located on the ground floor of
the Ophelia Parrish Building. The Gallery is open Monday
thru Friday and various shows are on display throughout
the year.

The Kirksville Arts Association is open Wednesday-Sunday
and hosts month-long exhibits in their gallery. In addition
the Arts Center in the home of Curtain Call Theater and
the Arts Association provides art classes and art
programs in the community.
