Big Creek Conservation Area
With 1,066 acres, Big Creek Conservation Area is located one mile southwest of Kirksville off Route H. The majority of the area is open and the remainder is made up of timber and timbered draws. Deer, turkey, squirrels and upland game are available for hunting. Camping is allowed.
Montgomery Woods Conservation Area
This conservation area is 19 miles southwest of Kirksville on Highway 11. The 348-acre area is wooded, providing for abundant populations of white-tailed deer and wild turkey. Camping is allowed.
Shoemaker Conservation Area
This conservation area, located 7 miles north of Novinger near Route D, is a 200-acre area characterized by oak and hickory wooded hills with narrow ridges. This area supports populations of deer, turkey and squirrels. Spring
Creek runs throughout the northern portion of the area. Camping is allowed.
Sugar Creek Conservation Area
Located 4 miles southwest of Kirksville on Hwy 11, Sugar Creek Conservation Area consists of 2,536 acres The area is primarily forested and is bisected by Sugar Creek and Elm Creek. White-tailed deer and wild turkey are abundant
in the area. Camping is allowed.
Union Ridge Conservation Area
This area spans parts of Adair, Putnam and Sullivan counties and is accessible from Route D two miles north of Green Castle. The 7,981-acre area consists of grasslands, fields, prairie and forest bisected by Spring Creek. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, and bobwhite quail. Camping is allowed.
Trout Fishing
Spur Pond is located on Osteopathy Street in Kirksville is stocked annually with 1400 trout by the city of Kirksville in partnership with the Missouri Conservation Department. The pond is open on a catch and release basis until Jan. 31st each year. From Feb. 1- Oct. 31, the trout may be harvested up to four trout a day. Fishing licenses with a trout license are required.
Muskellunge, Bass, Catfish, and Crappie Fishing
Hazel Creek Lake is located two miles west of highway 63 four miles north of Kirksville. The 530 acre lake contains
Largemouth bass (limit- 2 per day), Muskellunge (limit -1 per day), Channel and Blue catfish (limit- 4 per day combined), Crappie- (limit- 15 per day). Fishing license required.
Bass, Walleye, Catfish, and Crappie Fishing
Forest Lake is located within Thousand Hills State Park in Kirksville. The 573 acre lake sit is the middle of the 3,080 acre state park. Forest Lake contains Largemouth bass (limit -6 per day), Walleye (limit-4 per day) Channel Catfish (limit- 4 per day), Crappie (limit-20 per day).
